LA GIOCONDA

Pekka Lounela(1932-2002)

Free like a sighing sea
and wind reticent.

Doesn't meet colour, style lightly enough
smile's anxiety, resignation,
word doesn't reach: lacking the song is.

Smile, silence, wind -
you, your joy, despair,
songs: sea-gray futility under worries.

La Gioconda is an alternative name for Leionardo da Vinci's(1452-1519) painting Mona Lisa, and also the name of an opera by Amilcare Ponchiellin(1834-1886) from the year 1876, of which has ben filmed three movie versions after this poem was published in the collection Epätieto(1954).

La Gioconda has been translated from an anthology edited by Hannu Mäkelä(1943-), Uuden runon kauneimmat 1(1970, 1. printing 1968), page 176. This anthology was selected from an earlier one, which had been edited by Osmo Hormia(1926-83), Uuden runon kauneimmat : valikoima modernia suomalaista lyriikkaa vuosilta 1946-1956(1958).
