Severi Nuormaa(1865-1924)
You were the beautiful Catherine of my childhood,
I made a crown for you from moonlight,
and veils fine from the glittering of streams,
you I took to the castle of my dreams.
Oh Catherine, Catherine! then was rejoicing,
spring dew in your eyes glittering.
Oh Catherine... then glittered tears,
but Eric is your friend!
Sin' olit lapsuuteni Kaarin kaunis has been translated from the collection Runoja(1900).
The poet compares his love to the story of Swedish king Eric XIV(1533-77, r. 1560-68) and his wife Karin Månsdotter(1550-1612) via referencing a poem, Kung Erik, of Sven Tröst(Carl Johan Gustaf Snoilsky, 1841-1903).
