Aarni Kouta(1884-1924)
Purest diamond, that burst open at the coming
of the first shadow of the evening, my life's evening!
My last song I now sing to you,
from your rays I knot a bridge to thereafter.
You don't bind me to the earth nor the soil.
Everything, dearest once, from around me fades,
all transient into your starry shimmering changes; -
forever I bind you to my soul's gold.
Dearest diamond, hidden was your luster from me
in the tumult of the bazaar of life's vanities.
Seen were you by an eye, magnified by sorrow,
you inner shimmer is the fire of woes!
You are the most precious plaything of the gods,
not a vain distraction, glimmering only.
You are the deepest thought of a suffering heart,
your brightness is the soul's deepest yearning.
You glitter like the first morning dew
on the fields of the blessed; places strange
you show to me, fill my spirit with your incandescence.
Trembling I press you against my heart.
Dark diamond, most holy, purest woman,
you sparkle like a strange gem.
If I lose you, I am without everything,
you gift divine of life's evening.
Your shimmer my steps always guides,
on earth you take me yet to the banquet of the gods.
For you my everything, oh everything I lavish,
your soul my soul shimmering in the night encounters!
(Ylösnousemus; Ristin tie, 1922.)
