Katri Vala(1901-1944)
The air clings like a glass bell,
the hoarfrost needles of the trees jingle.
Like a stream of cooled steel
under the blue shadows the road curves.
Houses, silent boulders
in the icy glare of the air as in freezing water.
Human life smoulders
awaiting the sun
wanting to burn into a living flame
through death, the glittering trance
of stiffening.
Talviyö(1942) has been translated from page 496 in the anthology Tämän runon haluaisin kuulla 2(1989), edited by Satu Marttila(Satu Koskimies, 1941-), Juha Virkkunen(1941-2008) and Mirjam Polkunen(1926-2012).
